October 2002Editorial
Ah, welladay, fellow hist-fic fans,
A year has passed since Bygone Days first fired up the forge. Under the tutelage of Vulcan, our smiths have pounded out some passing fine horseshoes, non? May a steady stream of their wares continue to grace our shelves. (Hint, hint!)
Never let it be said that 'historical fiction' is dead. In fact, should you hear such perfidious sacrilege uttered, we urge you to take the speaker firmly by the elbow, lead him or her to the nearest computer, and type in our url. We are not at liberty to suggest breaking upon the wheel, beheading by guillotine, or even a good crack on the noggin with a barstool; the subtleties of re-education shall have to suffice.
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty."--that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.
- John Keats, Ode on a Grecian UrnHistorical fiction lurks everywhere, under guise of mystery, fantasy, adventure, romance--let the marketing mavens call it what they like for the sake of packaging, dahhlings. We're a pragmatic lot. We'll ferret out the good stuff.
Honoured, as ever, to be at your service, K.A. Corlett
